About trailable

The same park can feel very different to different people. A steep slope, uneven surface, narrow path, or short flight of stairs may determine whether someone can enjoy an outdoor space independently.

trailable brings together field research and real visitor experiences to help people understand outdoor accessibility before they arrive.

By documenting trail conditions, accessible facilities, potential barriers, and route-specific details, we aim to make outdoor recreation more informed, inclusive, and welcoming.

Our mission

Give disabled visitors, caregivers and families clear, practical information to decide for themselves whether a park or trail works for them.

What we assess

Surfaces, slopes, pathway widths, steps and curbs, parking, washrooms, seating, signage, wayfinding, tactile and written information, noise and crowding.

How information is collected

Student volunteers follow a shared assessment guide on specific routes, recording measurements and photos. Visitors add their own experiences.

How reports are reviewed

Every submission is checked against evidence and existing information. Updates are approved by the team, and change history is kept. New reports never overwrite verified information automatically.

How you can participate

Join as a student researcher, suggest a park, report a closure, review your visit or help verify existing reports.

How accessibility ratings work

Ratings summarise observed conditions on one assessed route. They are a provisional framework, not a certification, and do not guarantee suitability for every person or disability. Missing information is shown as “Not yet assessed”, never as a low rating.

  • Rating A: Few observed barriers Few observed barriers along the assessed route.
  • Rating B: Some manageable variations Some manageable surface or slope variations.
  • Rating C: Sections require caution Sections require caution or may be difficult for some users.
  • Rating D: Significant barriers Significant barriers restrict access along important sections.
  • Rating E: Major barriers Major barriers substantially limit movement along the assessed route.
  • – Not yet assessed or insufficient information.
